Jonathan
Biblical, from Hebrew meaning "gift of God", it is found in the Old Testament, especially as the name of the son of Saul who became the friend of David (1 Samuel 31; 2 Samuel 1 17-26), giving rise to the literary expression "David and Jonathan" as a symbol of true friendship. It was popular with Puritans in the 17th century. A well-know 18th-century bearer was the Irish writer Jonathan Swift., author of of Gulliver's Travels.
